Restaurant Loyalty Programmes: Rewards That Encourage Return Visits

· Jasmine Apps

A barista welcomes a returning guest at a boutique hotel café in a cover about practical loyalty rewards.

Give guests a clear reason to come back

Restaurant loyalty programmes work best when guests understand the offer and staff can explain it naturally. A complicated points system that nobody mentions at the till is unlikely to change behaviour.

For a hotel restaurant or bar, the first decision is who the programme serves. Local diners may visit every week. A business guest may return monthly. A wedding guest may never be in the area again. The same reward can have a very different appeal to each group.

Till Jasmine's published loyalty feature lets staff look up a member, award points on a sale and redeem rewards. Managers can review the venue's points scheme. That provides the transaction workflow; the venue still needs to design an offer that makes commercial sense.

This guide is about the offer, the staff routine and the measures that tell you whether it is useful. It complements the existing app tutorial rather than repeating every button press.

Choose one audience and one first reward

Start with a group whose visits you can realistically influence. A hotel with a popular coffee counter might begin with local customers. A restaurant might focus on guests who already return for weekday meals.

Choose a reward that is relevant to the next visit. Keep the explanation brief enough for a busy member of staff to use in one sentence. Then publish the rules guests need: how points are earned, what can be redeemed, any exclusions and when expiry applies.

Guest groupOffer to exploreQuestion to test
Local coffee customersA defined drink rewardIs the target achievable during normal visits?
Regular restaurant guestsA clearly priced dining rewardDoes it give a reason for an additional visit?
Returning business guestsA reward relevant to their stay patternWill they have a chance to use it?
Visitors to several venuesA consistent group scheme, if supportedAre earning and redemption rules clear at each site?

These are design ideas, not promises that every reward or multi-venue arrangement is enabled in your configuration. Confirm the supported scheme and scope before advertising it.

Check the result: The offer is sustainable for the venue.

Price the reward before announcing it

A reward's menu price and its cost to the venue are different figures. Consider ingredients, fulfilment costs and whether the reward replaces something the guest would otherwise have bought.

For a simple illustration, suppose a venue awards one point per £1 of eligible spend and offers a defined reward at 100 points. A guest earns 100 points after £100 of eligible spend. If the reward costs the venue £1.20 to supply, that direct reward cost is 1.2% of the qualifying spend.

That does not mean the programme costs only 1.2%. Include software, administration, any additional variable costs and the effect of substituting a free item for a paid one. These numbers are illustrative, not Jasmine's default points rules or a claim about your margins.

Set the offer using your own figures. A generous headline reward is only sustainable if the programme helps create enough additional contribution to justify it.

Connect the member to the correct sale

Till Jasmine's existing guide describes staff looking up a card or member, attaching it to the sale and awarding points when the sale is paid. Rewards are redeemed before taking payment.

The practical control is to confirm the correct member before completing the sale. A shared surname or similar name can lead to points being attached to the wrong person. The documented workflow includes removing a member from the sale before payment if the wrong one was selected.

Make the routine part of staff training: ask whether the guest has a card, identify the correct member and explain any eligible reward without delaying the order. Staff should not promise points or redemption that the configured scheme does not support.

Check the result: The scheme is improved from actual guest experience.

The existing Till Jasmine guide describes an enrolment workflow at the till. Before using it, confirm what details are required, how staff should explain the programme and where the guest can read the relevant privacy information.

Joining a loyalty scheme should not be treated as automatic permission to send promotional emails or texts. If you want to use guest details for marketing, check the applicable consent or qualifying soft opt-in conditions and opt-out requirements in the ICO electronic-mail marketing guidance.

Keep this article focused on loyalty rather than turning enrolment into a lengthy sales form. Ask only for what your approved process needs. Refer guests to the Jasmine Apps privacy information and your venue's own notice where applicable.

Give staff a short, natural explanation

Try a simple invitation suited to your configured offer: “Do you have a loyalty card with us? We can attach it to this sale so you receive the points your purchase earns.”

If a guest is interested, explain the reward and where they can read the rules. If they decline, complete the sale normally. Avoid repeatedly asking a regular guest who has already said no.

Train staff on exclusions, adjustments and who can answer a dispute. They should know whether a reward applies to the current order and when to ask a manager. A clear answer is better than an improvised promise that another shift cannot honour.

Illustrative scene: Measure repeat visits and programme costs, not only sign-ups.

Measure returns, not only sign-ups

A list of new members shows interest, but it does not prove additional visits. Decide what you will measure before launch and check it over a period that fits your audience's normal visiting pattern.

MeasureWhat it tells you
Members attached to paid salesWhether staff are using the programme
Returning participating guestsWhether members are coming back
Reward redemptionsWhether the offer is understandable and achievable
Qualifying spendThe purchases associated with the scheme
Reward and programme costWhat the offer costs to run
Staff or guest problemsWhere the rules or workflow need improvement

Use only data and reports your system provides, with any additional analysis clearly defined. Do not imply that Till Jasmine automatically produces every measure in this table.

Compare equivalent periods and allow for seasonal demand, events and price changes. People who already visit often are more likely to join a loyalty programme, so a higher visit rate among members is not automatically caused by the scheme.

Run a small pilot before expanding

Start in one service area with a clearly defined reward and review it regularly. Let the team practise the till routine and record questions guests ask.

You might find that a target is too difficult to reach, the wording is unclear or the reward is not what regulars want. Adjust one thing at a time and communicate the revised rules properly. Protect the expectations of guests who earned points under the earlier terms.

If you later want a scheme across a hotel, restaurant and bar, ask to see the exact multi-venue setup. Confirm which sites participate, how balances are recognised and where guests can redeem. Shared branding alone does not establish those rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Offering a reward before checking its real cost and redemption terms.
  • Counting every member's existing spending as new revenue.
  • Making staff search through an unclear process during peak service.
  • Attaching the wrong member to the completed sale.
  • Advertising cross-venue redemption before the setup is confirmed.
  • Treating programme membership as blanket permission for marketing.

The best first scheme is one that the team can operate consistently and that a guest can understand without needing a long explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Can Till Jasmine award loyalty points at the till?

Its published feature page and existing tutorial describe looking up members, attaching them to a sale, awarding points and redeeming rewards. The venue's scheme determines the rules.

Does a loyalty programme guarantee more visits?

No. Test a relevant offer, measure results and account for guests who would have returned anyway. No increase is promised here.

Should we start with points or discounts?

Choose the supported offer your guests understand and your margins can sustain. A direct discount can be easy to explain, but its cost and effect on existing sales still need measuring.

Can guests earn and redeem across our venues?

Confirm the exact participating venues and configuration in a demonstration before publishing that promise.

Example from the actual app

The actual Products & Categories page separates the product record from its On till placement, and the Till Layout screen separates selling pages from the Payment page. Use those real checks for this workflow. The dashboard’s hourly and payment-method views report the venue’s recorded sales; a layout change should be tested on the intended device before its effect on service is assessed. For this article’s guest benefit check, choose a reward relevant to normal visits. Verify the guest understands why joining is useful.

Use the checklist with a colleague who did not configure the workflow. Ask them to complete the ordinary task without coaching, then compare the result with the expected outcome. Record the point where they hesitate or need information from another shift. That observation gives you a specific improvement to make before extending the setup.
